Are You A Hope Filled Christian?

April 2008 Musings from Pastor's Office: Easter Egg and Resurrection Coloring boiled eggs was so pleasant on the eve of Easter when we were young. It usually took several hours to finish the whole process of turning 'normal' eggs into Easter ones: boiling, cooling down, painting and drawing, and wrapping. It's pretty hard to be reminded all the joyful memories and feelings with the plastic pink Easter eggs born in the assembly lines. We put some words like 'resurrection' or 'victory of Christ' on the surface of the eggs and wrapping them with very colorful strips. I think that I took getting and eating Easter egg on the Easter for granted not knowing what Easter eggs meant. I and my friends competitively collected the eggs by asking the elderly of them. I remember that I collected 22 eggs on one Easter morning and ate them up till the next morning. My stomach was definitely upset and I didn't eat the boiled eggs for a year. Of course, the egg shell in the Easter story means the grave where Jesus buried. The egg shell seemed weak enough to be broken easily. But, when a newborn chick wants to get out of egg, it takes the full strength and patience for a chick to make it. The beak neither enough hard nor matured is the only tool to break down the solid outer dome. It must be the foremost barrier for a chick to survive. If a chick settle in it and give up coming out, it will turn to be a REAL grave. We as human beings also have our own egg shells. They provide us with comfort, rest, and protection. Those shells are so prevailing and influential to draw all the boundaries of our lives even if they are invisible and intangible. We reside within the shells for it feels safe. We are used to living under excessive protection that keeps us from growing and moving ahead. Those shells lock us in and kill us slowly. What are those shells you have? You need to name them, first. What prohibit you from gaining a new life and growth? We need to keep in mind the fact that shells could be graves. Jesus broke his shell. He conquered the grave. Resurrection and new life include crashing down the grave, the monumental symbol of power of death. It would have been funny if Jesus had claimed of his resurrection while being locked in the grave: "I am alive only within the grave!" We can't stay inside the shell forever. It will make us a fossil and life will be gone pretty fast. Easter won't be given to those who are domesticated in the comfortable zone. It requires breaking down the shell with all the strength we have. That's our Easter story and a new life.
